New Year’s Eve Traditions in Brazil

Want to celebrate like a real brasileiro or brasileira? These classic Brazilian New Year traditions turn the night into a mini-ritual of luck and hope:

New year’s lentils

Lentilhas (lentils), originally from Asia, are part of a Brazilian dish eaten during New Year’s Eve celebrations. If you want a year of abundance and plenty of food, just add a spoonful of lentils to your New Year’s Eve dinner.

Eu como lentilhas na ceia de Ano Novo para ter prosperidade.
I eat lentils at New Year’s dinner to have prosperity.

Wearing white

Wearing white clothes comes from Afro-Brazilian religions like Candomblé. White represents peace and spiritual cleansing. It’s also super photogenic on the sand at midnight.

Colored underwear

Although everyone wears white clothes, the color you choose for your underwear is also very important. How so? Because each color represents something you want for the coming year:

  • Yellow – money & success
  • Red – love & passion
  • Green – health
  • Pink – romance
  • Blue – tranquility

If you want to dive deeper, check our Dica about New Year’s Eve colors later – perfect if you’re googling “Brazil New Year clothing” and planning your look.

Jumping waves

It is a typical Brazilian tradition to jump over seven waves to attract good luck for the coming year. For each wave you jump over, you must make a wish. When you are finished, do not turn your back to the sea. Walk backwards until your feet are no longer touching the water, and then turn around.

Flowers for Iemanjá

Offer flowers and small boats with gifts to Iemanjá, the Sea Queen from the Candomblé and Umbanda religions. If the boat sinks, it means that Iemanjá will make your wish come true, but if the boat comes back, she won’t. By the way, making holes in the boat is cheating!

Fill your champagne glasses and wait for midnight. When the fireworks start, make a toast. This will bring you good luck and prosperity for the coming year. This year, let’s wish each other a Happy New Year in Portuguese!

Grapes and Pomegranate 🍇

Would you like to start the year with good luck and prosperity? Easy! In Brazil, it is common to eat grapes and pomegranates during the fireworks. In addition to being a delicious tradition, it is said that if you keep the seeds in your wallet, you will have good luck.

Shared Celebration

The most beautiful part? Strangers become friends. People hug, dance, share drinks, and shout “Feliz Ano Novo!” in every language. For one night, Copacabana feels like a united little planet.

So, what do you think of these Brazilian New Year’s Eve traditions? Are they different from those in your country? Let’s chat!

Where to Stay for New Year’s Eve in Copacabana

If you’re coming from abroad, the big question is: where should I stay to enjoy New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro?

Here are some ideas:

1. Stay in Copacabana (Right in the Action)

Perfect if you want to walk to and from the beach.

  • You’ll be able to go back to your room to rest, use the bathroom, or change clothes.
  • Many hotels on Avenida Atlântica sell special New Year packages with dinner, open bar, and rooftop or terrace access with a view of the fireworks.

It’s more expensive at this time of year and sells out fast, so book months in advance.

2. Leme, Ipanema & Arpoador (Nearby and Scenic)

If Copacabana is full (or too pricey):

  • Leme (north end of Copacabana) is a bit calmer and still an easy walk to the main stage.
  • Ipanema and Arpoador are neighboring beaches with their own vibe, bars, and sometimes smaller events. It’s still not too hard to reach Copacabana on foot or by metro.

3. Botafogo, Flamengo & Centro (Good for Budget & Escape Routes)

If you prefer easier exits after the party:

  • Botafogo and Flamengo offer hotels and hostels with quicker access to taxis, buses and the metro once the traffic reopens.
  • Centro (Downtown) sometimes hosts stages too and can be a good base if you’re also visiting museums and historical sites.

Travel sites consistently point to Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema and nearby neighborhoods as the most strategic areas to stay for Copacabana New Year’s Eve.

Get there early:

Copacabana is packed with people during New Year’s Eve. To secure your spot on the sand and enjoy the pre-party vibes, plan to arrive early. Buses may not be running or will be limited, so the subway is your best option, but subway stations will be crowded, so allow plenty of time to travel.

Taxis and Uber may be available, but expect higher fares and possible delays due to increased demand and road closures. We do not recommend them for this night.

Travel tip: Buy your subway tickets in advance! Long lines are inevitable, so avoid the last-minute rush by purchasing your special New Year’s Eve tickets online or at designated ticket windows in advance. There are special, limited subway tickets for this night, as a regular ticket will not be valid on New Year’s Eve at Copacabana.

Where to Buy Your Tickets

  • No glass of any kind on the beach – that means no glass champagne bottles or glass cups
  • No sharp or cutting objects (knives, scissors, etc.)
  • No fireworks, weapons, or drones
  • Access to the sand is often through security gates with metal detectors

  • Stay hydrated: the excitement of the party can distract you from thirst, so drink regularly throughout the night.

  • Travel with a buddy system: stick with friends or family, especially during the early hours of the morning. Look out for each other and stay in well-lit areas.
